Bob Geldof, remember him? Ya, hes the LiveAid guy. Apparently hes a musician too, but for the life of me I couldnt remember what band he was in without the help of Google. Thats cool though, LiveAid is a righteous cause and is a great claim to fame. Still, the man perplexes me; does he really understand what he is talking about? Does he believe that any of the G8 nations can realistically give 0.7% of their GDP to poor nations? Of course, it would be fantastic if they could since that would equal about US$248,489,136,000.00, a number I can't even fathom. Really, it would be fantastic. World hunger would be finished, many pesky diseases would be abolished and we'd each have enough to pay a visit to the local strip club for a private dance. Recently, Sir Geldof spoke to world leaders at the United Nations regarding the state of affairs in poorer nations and kudos to him for doing everything he can do to help, but I just can't get rid of the feeling that he's doing this as much for the people of, say, Ethiopia, as he is to keep himself in the spotlight. Now, before you send me hatemail, please read the article here. Back then, are you? Good. As I was saying, at this meeting of the nations, Bob Geldof called Canada "wierd". Now, I'm Canadian and proud of it, and anyone who taunts my country is liable to get a hockey stick to the knee (or worse). We are wierd for not giving 0.7% of our GDP to poorer countries, even though it was Canada that promoted that figure many years ago. We are currently sending about 0.3%, or $3b to poorer nations, not to mention forgiving loans, military (heh) assistance and various other things that we Canucks do. Still, Bobby makes a good point, why aren't we sending the full pop over considering we Canucks promoted that figure? We Canadians are the only G8 nation that is currently enjoying a surplus - take that, ya bloody Republicans! It also turns out that our surplus is, oh, wait, uhhhhh... 0.7% of our GDP. Shit.
